Gorkha District April 2015-April 2016. Funded by US based Empower Dalit Women of Nepal (EDWON)
In the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake, and before completion of CDWN’s NGO registration process, members of CDWN’s board and staff delivered gender- and caste-integrated earthquake relief in rural Gorkha to Dalits and other marginalized people.
We supplied 800 vulnerable women living in earthquake camps with solar lights to prevent sexual violence.
We coordinated Dalit and marginalized community members in a self-help approach for earthquake recovery; we oversaw construction and completed 250 safe, semi-permanent shelters for 1200 people; and we also built 120 latrines and WASH (water sanitation, health) stations in Bakreswori, Thulogaun and Taklung.
After finalizing our NGO status, we delivered a 2-day WASH (water, sanitation, health) mentor training to 22 Dalit women from 22 rural communities. The women learned how to safeguard the water supply and monitor outbreak of disease, and were encouraged to use new latrines and WASH stations. Training was held in Kurintar. We had technical assistance from Oxfam America.
