Kamala was born in Gulmi District in Western Nepal. She was a Member of Parliament between 2013 to 2017, representing the Communist Party of Nepal (ML). Kamala has advocated for Dalit women for more than 20 years in Nepal’s rural and urban communities and has mentored numerous other advocates. She has been engaged in the Dalit movement through organizations such as the Feminist Dalit Organization (FEDO) in 1995, the Jagaran Media Center in 2001 and the Institut for Human rights Communication, Nepal (IHRICON) in 2005 and the Interparty Dalit Women’s Network. She has focused her efforts on advocacy, human rights and social inclusion. Kamala has represented Nepal’s Dalit women at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York in 2013 and again in 2018.
